  Smallpox blankets DO INDEED refer to the historical use of contaminated fabrics to spread disease to Native American populations. While earlier European-led epidemics were largely accidental, the most well-documented deliberate case occurred in 1763, when British officers at Fort Pitt knowingly distributed smallpox-infected blankets during Pontiac's Rebellion
  The Fort Pitt Incident (1763)
  The only definitively documented instance of intentional biological warfare involving smallpox blankets occurred during the siege of Fort Pitt (in modern-day Pennsylvania). Facing dire conditions, British Captain Simeon Ecuyer and trader William Trent gave two Delaware emissaries blankets and a handkerchief taken directly from a local smallpox hospital, writing in a journal entry: "I hope it will have the desired effect.
  Historical Context and Strategy
  British commanding officer General Jeffery Amherst later expressed enthusiastic approval for using smallpox as a biological weapon. In private letters, he explicitly suggested utilizing infected blankets and other methods to "Extirpate this Execrable Race."
  The 1837 Epidemic Debate
  Another major event associated with the smallpox blanket narrative is the devastating 1837 epidemic on the Great Plains, which decimated the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes. Oral histories and historical accounts frequently allege that the U.S. Army or fur traders (specifically the American Fur Company) deliberately distributed smallpox-infected blankets. However, historians debate the validity of intentional distribution during this specific outbreak, with many pointing to accidental spread via a steamboat (the St. Peters) that refused to quarantine despite having infected crew members on board.
