10 Things To Know About S11E03 1080p WEB H264-CBFM

Season 11, Episode 03 – “Storms”
Recent storms have caused unprecedented damage across the country and, as our climate continues to warm, they’re going to become even more frequent and extreme. We examine the science of 2025’s Storm Éowyn, and head to the west coast to meet researchers who tracked and forecast the storm’s arrival, monitored the impacts of the highest windspeeds ever recorded in Ireland, and who are analysing data and running models to investigate what could happen and how we need to prepare for when the next Éowyn hits in a warming world.

Our weather systems generally arrive from the Atlantic, but the east coast is far from immune to the impacts of storms. In South Dublin Bay, nature has built an unexpected line of defence — wide, shallow waters, a sand spit and dunes that strip away some of wave energy of storms and protect the coast from the fury of the sea. We meet the researchers using the latest technology to monitor changes in these natural storm buffers and discuss how better planning and climate adaptation measures can help protect them and allow nature to do her job.

Severe storms cause widespread forest destruction, and the impacts are devastating: thousands of hectares felled, massive economic losses for forest owners, ecological damage and immense emotional toll on thousands of people whose lives are turned upside down. We meet the people who experienced the catastrophic impacts of Storm Éowyn and the researchers who are striving to ensure Ireland is better prepared, and our forests are more resilient, in the face of storms in the future.

And in Curious Chronicles, Fergus takes to waves to investigate the storm that’s widely believed to have inspired one of the world’s most famous plays…

10 Things To Know About S11E02 1080p WEB H264-CBFM

Season 11, Episode 02 – “Building Ireland”
Ireland is facing a housing and infrastructure crisis, and for every house we build, we need approximately 300 tonnes of raw materials, which is the equivalent of a house-sized hole in the ground. But how many of us ever think about where all these building materials come from? Ireland has a natural wealth of core building materials, and we head underground in Monaghan to explore the story of gypsum, a mineral that formed hundreds of millions of years and is now mined as an essential component in the production of the plasterboard that lines the walls of many of our buildings.

The housing challenge is further complicated by the climate crisis. Concrete is the second most used material in the world after water, but its carbon footprint is massive. And if we build more, we emit more, and with an ageing workforce and skills shortage, we need to rethink and modernise our construction methods. In Cavan, we investigate new technologies and materials that could revolutionise the construction industry and help it be more efficient and sustainable.

Of course, it’s not always about the new… Ireland is full of beautiful historic buildings and sometimes the greenest construction is the one that already exists. We meet the researchers and stonemasons who are using science to preserve and restore Ireland’s built heritage – its bridges, castles, churches and civic buildings – with care, precision and authenticity.

10 Things To Know About S11E01 1080p WEB H264-CBFM

Season 11, Episode 1 – “Change”
What’s the one change you want to make in your life, but you keep putting it off? Getting fit? Cooking more? Put up the shelving that’s been staring at you for months? In this episode we explore why we are so resistant to change and examine aspects of behavioural science through the lens of climate action. We gauge the mood of the public, discuss contributing factors such as status quo bias and meet researchers engaging social change advocates in the unlikely but powerful setting of the hair salon. We visit the dairy farmers who are deeply committed to their livelihood but who have dedicated 20% of their land to wildlife conservation and encouraging biodiversity. They have seized upon the opportunity to make a difference and show how one small change can lead to much bigger and exciting things. In Enniscorthy, we meet researchers working with local communities to empower them and transform how people live and move around Ireland’s small towns. And in Curious Chronicles, Fergus gets on his bike and explores how necessity can be the mother of invention and a driving force of change…
