“Not doing anything will not be a good outcome,” Professor Basky Thilaganathan gently tells Becky. Her unborn daughter has a rare non-cancerous tumour on her lungs, which is shattering news, but there is hope if she has a delicate laser procedure to destroy the blood vessel that feeds it.
It’s one of several emotional stories about the miraculous ways that surgeons can give an unborn baby a chance of life. There’s no guarantee, though, and be warned there are some deeply distressing moments.
Season 1, Episode 01 –
Doctors perform extraordinary surgery on babies still inside the womb, to save lives before they are born. This episode focuses on three expectant mothers navigating complex pregnancies. Becky’s unborn baby has a rare lung tumour that is growing rapidly, Ann-Marie is carrying identical twins, one of which has selective growth restriction jeopardising both baby’s chances of surviving, and Randika’s dwarfism makes giving birth a difficult proposition.
