Season 74, Episode 19 – “Ardingly 23”
Charlie Ross uncorks an episode of the show fizzing with fun and excitement at the South of England Showground in West Sussex. Among the stalls at the Ardingly Antiques Fair, he quizzes punters about a mystery metal object. While they ponder its purpose, two teams of antiques hunters search for three profitable items to take to auction. On the red team are friends Alex and Ollie, skippered by expert Jonathan Pratt. Against them are the blues, pals Lesley and Rachel, who are shopping with expert Kate Bliss. Early in their shop, Kate spots a silk handbag that looks as if it’s art deco but on closer inspection is revealed to be something later, so it goes back in the cabinet. Over with the reds, the lads spy an Edwardian desk set, but Jonathan doesn’t think it’s very practical, so it fails to make the grade. With minutes left on the clock, one team relaxes with a cake and a cuppa, while the other rushes to bag their last buy. In Buckinghamshire, auctioneer Hugo Lemon is ready and waiting to sell the teams’ items, but can he hammer out profits for either of them?

The reds plan to smash their sporting challenge with what Ben identifies as ship’s rudder, but it doesn’t float their boat. Later, Sam picks up the pace when she spots a vintage pedometer. Over with the cricketing blues, a reel-to-reel tape player takes Alison back to her early broadcasting days, and at another stall, they consider whether to convert a rugby ball-shaped decanter into a sale.

In Hele, near Exeter, two teams of shoppers rush around an antiques centre with their experts, hoping to bag profitable bargains. On the red team are dad and daughter Ade and Mel, helped by Ben Cooper, and for the blues, it’s friends Martin and Mark, aided by Gary Pe. With 60 minutes on the clock, the blue team’s first stop is a shining suit of armour. Across the centre, Mel gazes into a £200 crystal ball – does it foretell a win for the reds? In Chippenham, auctioneer Tim Weeks confidently predicts a few profits for the teams, but who will go home the victor?
