Season 9, Episode 10 –
On the final leg of his Belgian journey, Michael Portillo travels to Namur, capital of Wallonia, to discover a citadel dating back to the 10th century. He learns about the traditional sport of stilt jousting, still popular in the city today, and enjoys an exciting battle between the two historic teams. Travelling to Hotton in the Ardennes Forest, Michael explores a spectacular network of limestone caves discovered by chance in the 1950s and learns how they were formed over five million years. Finishing his trip in Florenville, just a couple of miles from the French border, he heads to the stunning Orval Abbey. Like a number of Belgian monasteries, it is known for its Trappist beer, and after a tour of the brewery, Michael ends his trip with a tipple.

Michael Portillo’s Belgian journey takes him back to Brussels to examine a dark chapter in the country’s past. At the Museum of Africa, on the edge of the city, he learns about Belgium’s brutal seizure of the Congo under King Leopold II and a grand exhibition to celebrate his colonial success. Travelling south into French-speaking Wallonia, Michael visits the site of the Battle of Waterloo, one of Britain’s most famous military victories. He explores a key position at Hougoumont Farm, where Wellington’s soldiers defended themselves from Napoleon’s forces, and joins re-enactors to fire a cannon known as Le Brutal. In the province of Hainaut, the centre of Belgium’s Industrial Revolution, Michael admires a 19th-century boat lift, one of four on the Canal du Centre, the only working examples of their kind in the world today.

Continuing his Belgian tour, Michael Portillo heads to the beach resort of Knokke-Heist and the world’s longest coastal tram, which enjoys splendid views across the North Sea, to trace its roots back to the 19th-century beginnings of tourism. He visits the Port of Zeebrugge, which was attacked by the British in 1918 when the country was occupied by the Germans. Further along the coast on the Dutch border, Michael explores the salt marshes and mud flats of the Zwin Nature Reserve, home to 300 species of birds, and helps to track their migration habits. And continuing to the medieval city of Bruges, Michael visits a saxophone maker and discovers how the instrument, so crucial to the development of jazz, was invented in Belgium

Michael Portillo’s Belgian rail journey continues in the Dutch speaking region of Flanders. In Antwerp, he discovers the city’s historic multibillion-pound diamond industry and drops in at the workshop of an expert. Just outside the city, Michael boards the Dendermonde to Puurs Heritage Railway, run by volunteers, and gets a chance to drive one of its 1950s diesel engines. Heading to Belgium’s third city, Ghent, Michael visits the magnificent cathedral and marvels at a 15th-century Van Eyck masterpiece, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, the most stolen painting in the world.

In the city centre’s sumptuous Theatre Royal, he learns how an impassioned opera performance led to revolution on the streets and the birth of an independent nation. Travelling by tram to the residential district of Saint Gilles, Michael discovers the Belgian origins of art nouveau at the elegant house of architect Victor Horta. Finishing his first day at the headquarters of Nato, opened in 1967, he recalls his time as defence secretary and enjoys a private viewing of its impressive archive.
