Season 17, Episode 02 –
Five more amateur cooks try to prove to judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace that they have the potential to be MasterChef champion 2021. The Signature Dish challenge sees two cooks safely into the next round. The other three then take on a new test – the Favourite Ingredient Challenge. Gifted with their chosen favourite ingredient, they must create one exceptional dish that showcases it. The stakes are high as one cook will be sent home, their MasterChef dream over. The four remaining cooks then compete for two quarter-final places, each cooking two courses that will excite not just John and Gregg but also MasterChef champions Saliha Mahmood Ahmed (2017) and Kenny Tutt (2018).

Finals Week continues on MasterChef 2019. Over the past six weeks the country’s most promising amateur cooks have been whittled down to the best four. All of them have just one goal: to lift the coveted MasterChef Champion trophy.

The final four talented amateur cooks embark on a culinary adventure of a lifetime in Hong Kong, where they will face three extraordinary challenges that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

The first challenge takes place at Lung King Heen, the first Cantonese restaurant in the world to be awarded three Michelin stars, where the final four will have to master one of Hong Kong’s most ancient food traditions - dim sum. Each contestant is tasked with recreating one of the dim sum on the restaurants menu to serve to specially invited diners. To help the finalists make sense of this ancient cuisine they will be mentored by the restaurants Executive Chef, Chef Chan Yan Tak.

Next, the amateurs have the honour of working with Chef Vicky Lau at her Michelin star restaurant Tate Dining Room. A rising star on the Hong Kong culinary map, Vicky took the food scene by storm earning a Michelin star just a year after she opened the restaurant in 2013. Two years later she was named Asia’s best female chef. Her menu uses the flavours and ingredients of her Chinese upbringing and combines them with French cooking techniques to create uniquely artistic fusion dishes.

The four contestants will be working during a busy lunch service at Tate Dining Room and are given three hours to each prepare and cook a dish from Vicky’s tasting menu. Vicky’s cooking is precise and her standards exacting, so there’s no room for error in such a high-pressure environment.

Finally, the finalists face the daunting challenge of creating an exceptional dinner at the five-star Kerry Hotel for mentors Chef Tak and Vicky Lau as well as some of the leading figures in Hong Kong’s food and cultural community. Inspired by their Hong Kong culinary adventure and showcasing the skills they have developed through their entire MasterChef journey; the finalist’s dishes must be truly exceptional for them to to stand out and prove they have what it takes to be crowned MasterChef Champion 2019

The MasterChef semi-finals continue with the remaining eight contestants challenged to create a dish inspired by someone they admire. After this challenge, one more cook will be leaving the competition while the others move on to a daunting challenge of cooking a three-course lunch at Grocers Hall, home to one of the oldest companies in the City of London.

Today, John Torode will oversee the kitchen, as the amateurs face a high-pressure lunchtime service. The VIP diners include leading spice industry experts and authors - James Whitmore, Master for the Grocers Company, Dr Stuart Farrimond, author of The Science of Spice, David Smale, a saffron farmer, and Gary Ridgewell from the Seasoning and Spice Association.

Then its back to the MasterChef kitchen for the last challenge of the semi-finals: to cook an outstanding dish to win over five of the country’s most feared restaurant critics - Tracey MacLeod, Grace Dent, William Sitwell, Amol Rajan and Jimi Famurewa.

Episode 18
Last week, five contestants were guaranteed a semi-finals place. Now, the other five remaining cooks are going head-to-head to fight for their place alongside them in the semi-finals.

Judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace are joined by renowned chef Alexis Gauthier, whose London restaurant now offers a completely plant-based menu. The five contestants are set a brief by Alexis to prep and cook one outstanding plant-based dish in just 90 minutes.

Episode 19
Tonight, MasterChef reaches the semi-final stage with a spectacular challenge at Glyndebourne in Sussex, one of the most celebrated opera houses in the world.

The nine chefs will be split into three teams of three and face the enormous challenge of mass-catering a fine-dining event. Each team will have to create a dish for a three-course menu to feed 80 guests consisting of opera singers, theatre directors, costume designers and members of the theatre company for a special dinner that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the opening of the new opera house. With just four hours to deliver, organisation and teamwork is essential for success.

Then the nine contestants return to the MasterChef kitchen for a scraps challenge. They must create a stunning dish from scraps and leftovers including pigs' ears and tails, cod head, scallop roe and salmon bones.

With one more contestant going home after this, the battle is on to stay in the competition and take another step towards being crowned MasterChef champion 2019.
